DELE B1 & C1 Certificates | 01 â€‹

These documentes are certificates called the DELE. The DELE is an internationally renowned exam that assesses an individual's level of Spanish Fluency. The Levels range from A1 (beginners) all the way to C2 (native speaker). The certificate on the right I received after my first semester in Spain. I conversed with locals and practiced vocabulary often, but I was advised that B1 was my level based on my beginner-intermediate skills. After passing this test, I decided I would make it my goal to become fluent in Spanish, so I spent my next semester in Spain studying daily for the exam. This included rich conversation with friends and strangers, daily reading of all types of literature, listening to Spanish radio whenever I was walking around, and constantly practicing and memorizing vocabulary and frases. I decided to take the C1 exam after my year long stay in Spain (C1 is equivalent to basic Spanish fluency) and I was ecstatic to find out my practicing paid off and I passed the exam. My motivation to advance in my Spanish skills was fueled by a desire to be able to sustain complex conversations with those from a different background than I.

While in Spain, I fell in love with the majestic Spanish landscapes, the vibrant people and the linguistics of Spanish itself. I loved speaking Iberian Spanish because of the unique frases and accents every province of Spain possessed. Through these experiences, I discovered that I greatly enjoyed the gramatical aspect of Spanish and language itself. So I spent my free time making "Study Guides" for myself, compiling my lecture notes and homework handouts into study guides. Every new gramatical phrase I learned I would note down in my study-guides. The most enjoyable part of this experience was the fact that after I studied the new grammar or vocabulary, I would go out and try the new phrases with others. I was thrilled to finally have enough skills to be able to initiate conversation and sustain it.

I deeply enjoyed focusing on learning Spanish in Spain through my classes, field trips, and most of all through conversations with Spaniards. As I became more fluent, I was able to learn more about Spanish traditions and I felt more comfortable in Spanish society. Language was my instrument that allowed me to come to know Spanish culture. The notebooks pictured above I carried with me in Spain everywhere I went. I would write down words I did not understand in conversation and then study the words and their definition as I walked to class each day. As I took in the magical sights of children playing on the steps of historical cathedrals and the smell of tapas and spices all around me, I would look down at my little notebooks and study a word.

Upon moving to Ecuador I quickly realized the difference in dialects and vocabulary usage and I began picking up on Ecuadorian slang, once again navigating culture through unique language.
